President trump will request Harvard University return nearly $9 million received in corona-virus relief, saying the ivy league school should never have taken the fund , he said while addressing reporter at the white house corona-virus briefing on Tuesday evening.
The have one of the largest endowment in the country, if not the world, i guess and they are going to pay back the money. The shouldn’t have taken it he said.
The Boston institution whose $40 billion endowment is the largest of all academic institution around the world, faced a wave of criticism after it received millions of dollars as part of the $2 trillion package approved by congress last month.
Reacting to trumps comment, a Harvard University spokes man said the institution never received any funds from the Paycheck Protection Program aimed at small businesses, but instead cash to support struggling students.
“President Trump is right that it would not have been appropriate for our institution to receive funds that were designated for struggling small businesses,” a statement read.
“Like most colleges and universities have been allocated funds as part of the CARES Act Higher education Emergency Relief Fund.
the President also said burger chain Shake Shack was returning the $10 million it received in small business funding as part of the package.
